Mini-split commissioning is the documented process of proving that the installed equipment matches the design, the refrigerant and condensate systems were completed correctly, controls communicate, and every operating mode performs as intended. A unit that turns on has passed only the first part of startup.

Confirm the equipment and design match

Record full model and serial numbers for every indoor and outdoor unit. Run each mode and each head

Test cooling, heating, fan, and dry modes that the equipment supports. Operate heads individually and in meaningful simultaneous combinations. Watch compressor response, indoor and outdoor fans, louvers, valves, error history, and room-temperature trend.

Heating tests should include an explanation of defrost behavior; a natural defrost may not occur during startup weather. Measure without inventing pass criteria

Record indoor dry-bulb temperature, humidity, outdoor temperature, entering and leaving air readings where appropriate, electrical supply, and any manufacturer service data used. Compare the results with the installation or service instructions for that model.

Air temperature alone does not prove delivered capacity, and pressure alone does not prove correct charge. If results are questionable, investigate airflow, load, sensors, electrical input, and refrigeration operation in the correct sequence.

Walk every occupied zone

Stand where people sleep, work, and sit. Confirm that air reaches those locations without a persistent draft. Check how closed doors affect rooms expected to share a head. Demonstrate louver and fan settings for both seasons.

Deliver a usable owner record

Close outstanding items instead of accepting promises

Any fault code, drain leak, unexplained noise, damaged insulation, unstable room, or missing record belongs on a punch list with a responsible party and completion date. Re-test the affected function after correction.

Commissioning ends when the system is proven under the conditions available, limitations are disclosed, and the owner can operate it safely. That standard is more useful than a signature confirming only that the remote turned the unit on.

Plan a seasonal follow-up when weather limits startup

An installation completed during mild spring weather may not experience design cooling, cold-weather heating, or natural defrost. Mark those untested conditions instead of inventing results. Trend logging or a return visit can verify capacity, drainage, and control behavior when the relevant season arrives.

The follow-up should use the original startup record as its baseline. If room load, setpoints, or active head combinations changed, note the differences before comparing measurements. Seasonal verification closes a known commissioning gap; it is not a warranty substitute for unresolved faults present on installation day.
