AC Capacitor Size Guide: How to Read µF and Voltage Ratings
There is no universal capacitor-size chart that safely replaces the equipment label, service documentation, or original approved part. Identify the exact equipment and approved component data. Microfarad (µF) value, voltage rating, tolerance, capacitor type, duty, terminals, and physical installation must all be compatible.
What the microfarad rating means
Capacitance is measured in farads; HVAC motor capacitors are commonly marked in microfarads, written µF, uF, or MFD. The value is an electrical design requirement for the connected motor. A higher or lower number is not an upgrade and can affect motor current, torque, temperature, and life.
Use the exact rating required by the equipment or motor documentation. If markings are unreadable or conflicting, do not guess from equipment tonnage, compressor size, or the old can’s dimensions.
Voltage rating is not system voltage
A capacitor’s VAC marking is the maximum rated AC voltage for the component under its specification. It is not a statement that the HVAC system operates at exactly that voltage. Replacement decisions must follow approved equipment and component documentation.
Carrier advises that a technician install the correct microfarad and voltage rating. Physical fit alone cannot prove electrical compatibility.
Single and dual-run capacitors
A single-value run capacitor supports one motor section and shows one capacitance value. A dual-run capacitor combines two capacitance sections in one can, commonly for a compressor and condenser-fan motor, and shows two values such as “45/5 µF.” That example describes two separate capacitance sections; it is not a universal size for any tonnage.
Start capacitors and run capacitors have different duties. Do not substitute one type for the other based on a similar-looking can or a capacitance number.
How tolerance markings work
A marking such as ±5% describes the permitted capacitance range around the nominal value under the component specification. For example, Packard’s published Titan HD motor-run capacitor literature lists a standard tolerance of ±5%. That fact describes that product line, not every capacitor ever installed.
Tolerance does not authorize selecting a different nominal µF value. It defines acceptable variation for the specified part.
Why an AC-tonnage chart is unsafe
Equipment with the same nominal cooling tonnage can use different compressors, fan motors, supply voltage, refrigerant, efficiency, and control architecture. Some inverter systems use electronic drives rather than a conventional field-replaceable run capacitor. A “three-ton capacitor size” has no universal technical meaning.
Where approved information comes from
- Exact outdoor or indoor equipment model and serial information.
- Manufacturer service or parts documentation for that revision.
- Motor or compressor data where the equipment documentation directs its use.
- The original approved part number and supersession record.
- Qualified manufacturer or distributor technical support.
Record the complete nameplate from outside the closed cabinet. A technician can then reconcile the equipment model, parts list, wiring diagram, and component markings.
Physical fit is only mechanical
Round versus oval shape, can diameter, height, mounting strap, and terminal layout affect installation, but matching them does not prove the µF, voltage, tolerance, temperature, duty, or listing is correct. Conversely, an electrically approved replacement may require an approved mounting arrangement.
Safety boundary
Capacitors can retain hazardous energy, and HVAC cabinets contain line-voltage circuits and moving equipment. This guide intentionally does not provide discharging, testing, wiring, or replacement instructions. Do not open the cabinet, touch terminals, short terminals, move wires, or attempt live measurements.
If the AC hums, fails to start, trips protection, or has a visibly damaged component, turn it off using normal controls and call a qualified HVAC professional. Diagnosis must consider the motor, contactor, supply, controls, mechanical load, and other causes rather than assuming the capacitor is at fault.
Approved supersessions must be traceable
Manufacturers sometimes replace an obsolete part number with an approved successor. Treat that as valid only when official parts information or qualified technical support ties the supersession to the exact equipment. A marketplace listing that says “fits many units” is not the same evidence. Record the original number, approved replacement number, and documentation used.
Do not use symptoms alone to select a part. Hard starting, fan problems, humming, overheating, or tripping can have other electrical or mechanical causes. A qualified technician should diagnose the circuit and load, then use approved documentation to select any replacement. Replacing a guessed component can hide the real fault or damage another part.
Questions about capacitor ratings
Can a 440 VAC capacitor replace a 370 VAC capacitor?
Do not rely on a general rule. Use the exact equipment documentation and an approved part or supersession that specifies all required ratings and fit.
Does 45/5 mean 50 µF total?
No. On a dual-run capacitor it identifies two separate capacitance sections. The equipment documentation must specify both values.
Can I choose by physical dimensions?
No. Dimensions show fit, not electrical compatibility.
What if the label is unreadable?
Use the exact equipment model and official service or parts documentation. Do not guess.
